What I Wish I Knew Before Visiting Stockholm, Sweden

How To Travel From The Airport

The most common and subsequently most expensive way to travel from Stockholm’s Arlanda Airport is by way of the Arlanda Express. This high speed train takes just 18 minute to get to city center from the airport and will run visitors about 320SEK each way.

I used this method and found the speed and convenience to be worth the price.

If you’re on a budget, you may be more interested in taking a coach bus or commuter train for the airport for nearly half the price- but double the commute time!

How To Get Around In Stockholm

Stockholm uses an incredibly efficient public transportation system that makes it super easy to get around the city!

The transportation system, SL encompasses the city’s busses, trams, and ferries, all of which are clean with regular arrival times.

SL has an app system that visitors can use to check times and buy tickets, but most people seem to simply tap into their transport with their contactless card.

Since I was doing a lot of traveling around the city, I elected to try a third option- SL’s travel card for visitors. It cost an additional 50SEK to purchase the reusable green card, but it gave me unlimited access to SL’s transportation network for the entire 24 hour period I selected. Trust me, I made the 50SEK back quickly!

If it’s nice out, it feels particularly luxurious taking the ferry around. It’s such a nice way to see the city!

Keep An Eye Out For Art

Stockholm’s subway system is part art gallery! These installations are massive, but can be pretty out of the way, depending on where you’re traveling. My personal favorite piece was located at T-Centralen, so it’s pretty conveniently located for most visitors.

If I’d had an extra day or the weather had been less gorgeous during my visit, I would have spent all day exploring these different artworks!

Go Island Hopping

I guess I knew kind of abstractly that Sweden has thousands of islands, but it was definitely different to see it in person. Granted, I didn’t do much exploring deeper into Sweden, but I never felt more than a few minutes walk away from the water.

I mostly explored around Gamla Stan, Östermalm, and Södermalm, but I highly encourage visitors to try out at least one smaller island! You can check out my day trip to Vaxholm here.

Each island has its own personality, so definitely spend some time exploring. Gamla Stan’s historic culture is a completely different experience compared to the hip and trendy Södermalm!

Take advantage of the transportation services by going island hopping.

What is Fika

Understanding Fika is a key part of enjoying your trip to Stockholm. Who doesn’t enjoy break in the day dedicated to a sweet treat and conversation with friends? It’s meant to be enjoyed without hurry and as a result, it’s a perfect way to take a rest from a long day of exploring.

Make sure to try some of Sweden’s beloved cardamom buns!

  1. I haven’t been to Stockholm, but it’s on the list. I didn’t know they had decorated metro stations, so one more thing to add to the list. Maggie

    1. The art is definitely a perk in an already wonderful city!

  2. Honestly, public transport in most of Europe is levels higher than what we have here in the US! Sweden’s included; I love how Stockholm has also turned its metro stops into works of art to liven up the place. Fika is a great activity, and now, I’m craving a cardamom bun! Thanks for sharing!

    1. An all around great city, for sure!
