Stockholm’s Slow Fashion

One of my favorite things that I noticed on my first visit to Stockholm was that each island has its own distinct personality. Södermalm is the hip and youthful Southern district of Stockholm, often shortened to Söder.

Amongst Söder’s trendy shops and cool bars lives a thriving thrifting community- and exploring these second hand stores is a great way to spend a day in the city.

While the second hand stores are scattered throughout the neighborhood, walking from Gamla Stan, I ran straight to the densely packed slow fashion district on Hornsgatan.

There are over a dozen thrift stores located along this street alone, so I picked out some of my favorites.

Humana Second Hand

The first thrift I stopped in and subsequently one of my favorites, Humana Second Hand offers cheaper casual clothes- similar to Buffalo Exchange. It was chillier than I expected it to be for August in Stockholm, and I needed a jacket. I was immediately drawn to this denim jacket with colorful patterns blocked along the shoulders. Perfect! This kept me warm(ish) for the rest of my trip, and made for the perfect souvenir from Stockholm.

Broadway and Sons

Maybe it’s because I’m an American, but I found Broadway and Sons to be…weird. I mean, if you’re looking for American military clothes, there is no better place than this! I just found it weird to stumble over in a foreign country.

I only stayed here briefly before I realized I wasn’t interested in this style and moved on.

Judit Second Hand/Herr Judit

Located half a block away from one another, Judit and Herr Judit specialize in womens and mens clothes, respectively. (Herr= Mr/Sir in Swedish)

I can’t speak overmuch for their men’s selection, but I loved poking through their women’s shop! Their seemed to specialize in high-end, old-money style clothes. I struggled to talk myself out of an $80 belt (that retailed for over $200!) and I still regret it.

These clothes tend to be on the pricier side for used items, but once you see the quality, it makes sense.

Brocante Second Hand

Between the two Judits, Brocante Second Hand offered a lot of used glassware and trinkets, with a small selection of clothing in the back. Picture Savers!

Beyond Retro

The last stop on my shopping trip was Beyond Retro. This thrift shop was also similar to Buffalo Exchange, with a truly vast selection of clothing options- plus sales on their already cheap clothing! I could have rifled through these clothes for ages, but at this point I was really reaching my limit for trying on new clothes. There’s only so many time I can go in and out of changing rooms!

I spotted this handy list at Beyond Retro for those looking for more shopping options. Happy thrifting!

  1. Really cool to see Stockholm’s thrifting scene; although it’s not something I usually do while traveling, a few of the clothing items you showcased look like something worth popping into the shop to browse. However, my partner would be in heaven, as she loves to thrift! Thanks for sharing with us!

    1. I think thrifting can vary wildly depending on where you are. Luckily, Stockholm has some pretty great fashion and great thrifting options which made for some one of a kind souvenirs!

  2. The eco-fashion stores look fabulous. Thanks for the intro.

    1. They were really cool! Great style here 🙂
