Hotel Review: Stockholm- Downtown Camper by Scandic

Much like the name implies, the Downtown Camper has a fresh and fun outdoor camping theme- pretty unique when it comes to a central hotel!

Just a ten minute walk from Gamla Stan and twelve minute walk from Stockholm Central Station (where the very expedient Arlanda Express deposits you on the way from the airport), it’s hard to find a more conveniently placed hotel.

The lobby of the Downtown Camper is mostly concrete, but well balanced by wood and greenery. Much of the floor is taken up by the extensive dining area- most popular around breakfast time- but there are other areas available for relaxation and work. There’s even a podcast studio and workspace that visitors can rent out!

It’s also hard to miss the enormous net hanging over the lobby. Guests are allowed to lounge in the netting, though I think it was only open during specific times.

Downtown Camper offers a host of activities, from guided Vintage Shopping tours to running clubs, this hotels offers a bit of everything- and don’t miss their daily Marshmallow Moment, where you can roast s’mores with your fellow guests!

Although many of the amenities and decor gives the hotel the overall vibe of a hostel, its luxurious rooftop caters to adults just as easily. The rooftop is mostly enclosed with floor to ceiling windows allowing for maximum sunshine while protecting visitors from the chilly Swedish nights.

There is an open area on the roof that is almost entirely taken up by a heated pool and a few comfy seats, but the area is typically reserved for guests who have paid the extra fee to use the spa- and therefore only guests over the age of 16.

I was disappointed to find out about our limited rooftop access only when I had arrived since I had booked the hotel with the rooftop in mind! Regular guests typically had access after 8pm, and earlier on weekends, but it was still a disappointment!

Although I didn’t get a chance to see the gym (trust me, I was pulling enough steps each day), I poked my head in and it looked very modern and clean.

As for my room, I selected a Classic Double, just a little larger than the basic “cozy” room options. I was glad I splurged a little since the room was still a little tight, and with storage space more or less limited to under the bed, I was clambering over my suitcase for most of my stay.

The bathroom was decently large with a modern shower with good water pressure. The star of the show, though, was the lovely window nook- a huge couch area cozied up to a huge window. The perfect place to relax and enjoy the sun after a long day of exploring!

While the hotel had the overall vibe of a hostel for adults, I didn’t see too many people taking advantage of the opportunities offered by the hotel- including myself! This will, of course, vary based on who is visiting the hotel at the time, but it seemed that most people were keeping to themselves.

The hotel’s activity schedule didn’t line up with my plans during my visit, but they definitely had a few options worth checking out! Make sure to read the activity schedule handed to you at check in!

Overall, I enjoyed my stay. The hotel was clean and modern and had ample opportunities to meet new people (should you choose to take advantage of them). Its location and social nature makes it the perfect place for guests traveling solo!

  1. Sounds like a no-frills, yet comfy stay! Scandic seems to be a large hotel chain, as I’ve seen them in Denmark as well. Looks like Downtown Camper was convenient to stay, close to attractions and whatnot!

    1. Yes, I think I stayed in one when I was roadtripping through Norway! They kind of remind me of IHG’s Hotel Indigo/Kimpton hotels.

  2. Downtown Camper looks like the ultimate basecamp to absorb Stockholm

    1. Basecamp indeed! I loved the fun camping theme!
