Where to Eat and Drink in Glasgow

For the short period of time that I was in Glasgow, I did my best to sample as much of the food and drink as I could.

Although I didn’t focus on this during my visit, it’s good to note that Glasgow is one of the most vegan friendly cities in the UK!

I’ve never seen so many vegan restaurants and most of the regular restaurants still had extensive vegan options. Needless to say, I had no issue being lactose intolerant in Glasgow.

Ottoman Coffee

I was recommended Ottoman Coffee and it certainly delivered. The unassuming entrance leads into a huge establishment featuring an eclectic collection of Ottoman themed decor including comfortable chairs and couches to settle in with a cup of coffee.

The menu is unfortunately digital, but wifi is available. I really enjoyed my cup of coffee in the cozy atmosphere. It seemed encouraged that guests take their time here. There was even a collection of games to of play!

Tantrum Donuts

Tantrum donuts was touted as some of the best donuts in the city. I tried the Salted Glaze Honey Ring and the Creme Brûlée flavors and am inclined to agree.

The location I stopped at on Gordon Street was quite small, but there were still a few places to sit down to enjoy a treat (though sit-in donuts were a little more expensive than takeaway).

Mother India’s Cafe

Conveniently located just across the street from the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, I highly recommend this restaurant for a delicious post-museum meal!

The prices are very reasonable and the service was excellent!

I got the special, which ended up being some of the best Chicken Biryani I’ve ever had.

Howling Wolf

This cool jukebox bar is a great place to grab a bite to eat while listening to live music. The food leans toward classic American bar foods of burgers and wings, and there’s a full selection of beers and cocktails to choose from.

The basement section of the bar hosts live music nightly with an emphasis on blue music.

Bloc+

A similar music-focused bar, Bloc+ leaves more into alternative music. I stopped by here briefly but the Metal performer didn’t mesh well with my pounding headache and I left after only a few songs.

Still, the bar boasts a cool atmosphere that definitely makes it worth a visit.

Food is also served here, and they even have a full vegan menu!

Devil of Brooklyn

The Devil of Brooklyn was recommended to me by the front desk manager who checked me into my Glasgow hotel. I figured- I’m from New York! I have to check out the place named after Brooklyn!

This swanky cocktail lounge was certainly a treat, with a fantastic bar space and really cool decor. The cocktail menu is themed and changes regularly. It menu was themed around Greek Gods during my visit, but has previously had drinks inspired by the Seven Deadly Sins.

There is a whole second section of seating past the bar, but since I was visiting by myself, I was able to sit in the main bar section to really enjoy the ambiance.

I got the Apollo, which was delicious and strong despite its small stature.

  1. Great recommendations! I visited Glasgow almost a decade ago, and even back then, the vegan scene was very much alive. In fact, my first meal upon arriving was at a vegan restaurant, where I ordered “to-fish” and chips (made from tofu). It was very interesting, and it was quite tasty! Similarly, I’m horribly lactose-intolerant, so it’s good to know that Glasgow has so many establishments with non-dairy options. Thanks for sharing!

    1. I was so pleased to find vegan food! Especially since I’d been in the highlands for the past week or so which definitely had an emphasis on meat 😂

  2. Ooo Tantrum Donuts look amazing, and I always love a good curry – great recommendations 🙂

    1. If I had more days in Glasgow, I’d have had donuts for breakfast every day 😂
Indian food is always such a treat too!
