I bet you didn’t know that when you visited Budapest, you’d be joining a city-wide scavenger hunt.
Mykhailo Kolodko is a local Ukrainian-Hungarian artist who currently specializes in small-scale sculptures.
Over the past ten or so years, Kolodko has turned Budapest into his own personal gallery with over 40 individual sculptures appearing throughout Budapest.
These tiny guerilla art pieces are added at the artist’s discretion, so keep an eye out for new ones popping up!
The mini sculptures are approximately fist sized and scattered throughout the city. They’re small enough to be unobtrusive, but large enough that you wont need a magnifying glass to actually find them.

Most of the sculptures are located near popular tourist attractions, which makes it easy to hunt for them without having to miss out on any of Budapest’s famous sites.
I made it a personal mission to hunt these sculptures down when I knew I was near one. It made for a lovely prompt to really explore the city. I particularly enjoyed wandering down the Danube looking for sculptures after a few drinks. There are quite a few to look for along the river bank!
Even with the maps, there were one or two I looked for that I simply couldn’t find- even though I seemed to be standing right on top of them! They’re not THAT small!
Still, it’s incredible to look at a map of these pieces and realize just how many of them I walked right past without noticing.
Each sculpture is intentionally aligned with Hungarian culture- and it’s a nice thought exercise to figure out how they can be related! Kolodko’s first sculpture in Hungary was of the popular children’s show character Főkukac. This one, I’ll admit, went over my head. The show didn’t quite make it to America- but the rubix cube did! I had no idea it was invented by a Hungarian!

This list of sculptures was particularly helpful for my own treasure hunt.
